Dear Valued Client,
Welcome back to the Metametrix Memo! The July
issue is focused on the importance of fatty acid
balance. Fatty acid supplementation has increased
in popularity over the past few years. A recent study
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
shows that almost 12% of US
adult users of Complementary and Alternative
Medicines (CAM) use omega fatty acids (CDC
Advance Data Report #343). Learn why
it is critical to strike the right balance and
educate your patients on fatty acid supplementation.

Fatty Acids
|
|
Why Test Fatty Acids?
- Inflammatory Balance: Improper fatty
acid intake
affects the balance of anti- and pro-inflammatory
eicosanoids, increasing health risks.
- Statins: Among the top five drugs
prescribed last
year, statins have been shown to unfavorably alter
this inflammatory balance.
- Increased Free Radical Production:
Consumption
of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) without
increasing antioxidant intake will cause increased
production of free radicals.
- Immune Suppression: Excessive
consumption of
omega-3 fatty acids can suppress immune function,
leading to infections and poor wound healing.
- Improve Patient Compliance: Testing
guides and
supports your recommendations for higher doses of
fatty acid supplements.

the Bloodspot Fatty Acid Profile
Additional information on fatty acids
can be
found in "The Fatty Acid Profile: Dietary Intake
and
Beyond". Three sample cases of fatty acid
deficiency or excess are examined to identify an
optimal balance. Cases include:
- Early Signs of Insulin Resistance
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Omega-3 Dominance
