History

This 28-year-old male was tested to see if he could gain insight about the long-term symptoms following an episode that occurred while he was in school. During that time he had been working his way through school as a part time pizza restaurant employee and his diet was largely high carbohydrate pizzas. About eight years ago he experienced a period of severe GI problems with abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. Many tests had been done with no positive finding, but he had come to suspect that the episode was related to intestinal yeast overgrowth. He continues to have occasional episodes of GI disturbance.

Description of Results

The dysbiosis profile showed significant D-arabinitol levels with slightly high tricarballylate. The presence of yeast overgrowth at this time is indicated, along with an accompanying carbohydrate-loving bacterial strain that produces tricarballylate. These two compounds are frequently found elevated together because they are derived from carbohydrate precursors from the action of both yeast and bacteria.

 

Recommendations

Dietary carbohydrate restriction along with herbal mycostatic and bacteriostatic agents may be successful in bringing the intestinal microbial populations under control.

Other Comments

This case illustrates a manifestation of significant persistent yeast overgrowth in an immuno-competent individual. Here the presence of the yeast colonies does not present a life-threatening situation as it might in a immuno-suppressed individual where the rapidly progressive invasive candidiasis scenario requires aggressive intervention. The presence of the carbohydrate-stimulated bacterial strain suggests that dietary carbohydrate restriction along with herbal mycostatic and bacteriostatic agents may be successful in bringing the intestinal microbial populations under control.
